NowComment

| December 12, 2011

Now Comment is a sophisticated web app for group discussion and annotation of online documents. Its many unique features include a user interface that shows threaded comments “in context” with the original document, encouraging rich, in-depth conversation. Students start or join conversations on whatever passages they find interesting and important, intellectually engaging with the text, and with each other, in ways not possible in face-to-face class discussion. Instructors can participate, and discussions can remain online for grading and student review. NowComment has been tested at and licensed by the University of Virginia, whose SHANTI office is supporting its use as a core instructional tool starting Fall 2011.

The talk will discuss NowComment applications in the larger context of some educational advantages of online discussion: increased student engagement, greater information richness/depth of discussion, and overcoming time constraints. NowComment has been tested at and licensed by the University of Virginia, whose SHANTI office is supporting its use as a core instructional tool starting Fall 2011.
